Great tutorial, really helpful, but the way he holds the pencil seems really odd to me. Anyone else hold it like that? I feel like you loose a lot of precision like that

It forces you to draw with your entire arm rather than just your wrist. It's great for doing big, loose strokes which helps the drawing look less stiff...you're worried less about little details and more about the overall picture. I find it's better for when you're drawing on large areas. But it does help with the base sketch with smaller drawings. Try it.

Yes, in Fine Arts they make us hold it like that. It's better that way for most purposes and it's just as easy once you get used to it.

The best drawings are never just what you see. If you want to achieve a decent realism you've got to know what you're seeing and what to look for, anatomy and these kinds of tutorials are crucial for that. And the moment you want to make an expressive drawing you must be able to find the right gesture by understanding the proportions of the body and it's movement and be able and willing to deform it for expressivity's shake.

Sometimes what we see is not enough. Our jobs as artists is to see, interpret and try to make it better. Take a picture... make it better, take a landscape... make it better. And not all photos are good to copy from. Some photos are blurry, pixelated and have terrible lighting. Imagine a client goes to a painter and says "can you paint my grandfather who has passed away?" And the photo is blurry black and white and small. The client wants a realistic photo in colour. It is the artist's job to paint what he knows about the anatomy of the face and colour theory. Copying what he sees won't help him or her in this case. PS Michelangelo drew and sculpted from imagination and from what he knew (anatomy, design theory, perspective) not from what he saw.

This is technically correct but in order to draw what we see, we must learn to see first. This video helps with that.
